Additional Information | Parcheesi (pachisi) is a traditional game that was played as early as the sixth century in India, although other early versions of the game-board have also been discovered among the Persians, Iberians and Aztecs. The name is derived from the Sanskrit word pachis, meaning "twenty-five," the highest roll of the original cowrie-shell dice. Parcheesi became particularly popular in Europe during the nineteenth century, when it was known as "Ludo," and in variations such as "Royal Ludo". Many Canadian boards, such as this one, were handmade and decorated in the folk manner.
