Additional InformationHeadwear worn for public ceremonies is often spectacular. Military head-dresses worn on ceremonial occasions impress onlookers, as well as fostering regimental pride and allegiance. Indeed, all manner of "pomp and circumstance" requires its particular headwear: the civic parade, the powwow, royal visits, the changing of the Governor-General's ceremonial guard. Excerpt from exhibition text: Hold On to Your Hats!, September 1995 to September 1997.
Headwear plays a prominent role in religion, social rituals and ceremonies. Excerpt from exhibition text: Hold On to Your Hats!, September 1995 to September 1997.
This fascinating head-dress appears to be unique - made by a Native person for a fraternal organization - and was probably worn for parades or for secret rituals. The technique of using raised beading on red woollen cloth is in the eastern Iroquois tradition. The headband is covered with Orange Order symbols, including King William of Orange on his white horse, and biblical symbols, such as the Ark of the Covenant, the ladder of Faith, Hope and Charity, and the menorah. Excerpt from exhibition text: Hold On to Your Hats!, September 1995 to September 1997.
