Additional Information |
Florence Nightingale changed the image of nursing in Canada and around the world. Invited in 1854 to improve the appalling conditions in the British army hospitals during the Crimean War, Nightingale was popularized as the "Lady of the Lamp," as she toured the wards at night, bringing comfort to wounded soldiers. Nightingale devoted the rest of her life to health-care reform. Her supporters established the Nightingale system of nursing, which later inspired hundreds of nursing schools throughout Canada. This brick was presented to the Canadian Nurses Association by the National Council of Nurses of Great Britain in June, 1934.Excerpt from exhibition text : A Caring Profession: Four Centuries of Nursing in Canada, June 2005 to August 2006. |
